Abstract

The article brings the findings of an analysis on the state of the art of the teaching of sociology in Brazilian basic education. Starting from a survey of researches held at graduate programs, available at Capes database, the authors analyzed the abstracts of 41 Master’s Degree dissertations and 02 PhD thesis presented between 1993 and 2012. The aim of such survey was to estimate the evolution of the scientific production on the theme, considering data such as identification, program of origin, the circulation of the knowledge produced amongst the scientific community, and the theoretical and methodological profile adopted. The survey indicated the existence of a considerable research production in the area, especially since the year 2000. It has also been possible to assert that the researches were de-veloped mainly at graduate programs in Education and at similar programs in Sociology and Social Sciences, with a slight prevalence of the former. From a theoretical and methodological point of view, problems were found in the establishment of the theoretical and conceptual parameters necessary to define more precisely the teaching of sociology in basic education as object of study.
