The role of Political Science in the Brazilian scientific discourse
institutionalization and advances of a field under construction

This article discusses the insertion of the specific field of Political Science as an area within Social Sciences. The starting point of the international institutionalization process is here considered in the beginning of the 20th century. The stages of institutionalization and specific characteristics of the area are presented. In the second part, the study discusses the formalization of Political Science as a field of research in Brazil. The set of techniques called quantitative methods applied to empirical objects is one of the indicators of Political Science autonomy in Brazil. Another one is the institutionalization in postgraduate programs and scientific publications in the area.Downloads
