Abstract

Studies concerning violence in the Brazilian society are hardly new. However, the growing interest on urban crime in Brazil has been verified only a little more than forty years ago. Since then, we have verified an increasing theming of the issue, and only in the last decade its consolidation as one of the main mottos of the academic debate. Keeping the focus in Sao Paulo city, and the period after the mid-1970s, this essay aims to review the works elaborated in the light of this debate, especially scientific studies that attempt to evaluate the growth or decline of crimes, and to identify possible causes or factors that may explain them.
