Resumen

O artigo mapeia as principais teorias sobre federalismo e os desafios teóricos e empíricos enfrentados pelos pesquisadores que analisam esse modelo de divisão territorial de governo e autoridade. São analisadas também as diferentes ênfases que cada agrupamento teórico dedica às características-chave e às principais variáveis do sistema federativo. O artigo discute ainda a aplicação dos conceitos de relações intergovernamentais e descentralização em estudos sobre países federais, assim como as possibilidades de programas de pesquisa sobre esses temas.
