Abstract

The aim of this text is to review the classical and contem porary currents worked in the soci­ology of culture, stressing the im pact produced by herm eneutics and linguistic turns over com mon ways of sociological explanation. Therefore, the text is structured around the major problems in this field of study: social life and aesthetic form; text and context; distinction between “culture,” “reality,” and “language;” relations between problem s o f determ ination and m ediation. At the end, I present the state-of-art at the Brazilian field o f sociology using the discussion of these theoretical currents as a starting point.
