This article gathers contributions from law theorists and sociologists participants at the Réseau Européen Droit et Société (RED&S) on the concept of regulation and its conceptual outcomes on the contemporary law. The papers are presented from the viewpoint of knowledge paradigms themes and models of law, as well as on the relations of law, public policies, and social normative issues. Two axes are adopted to characterize four perspectives on the theory and sociology of law: the first one handles the law as a hermetic group of positive norms perhaps open to other normative issues; the latter involves the action theories or the systemic theories of law. Some arguments and conceptual variations on the debate are presented and some critical appreciations on the approach are advanced about social changes and contemporary policies.
