This review discusses the Brazilian social sciences bibliography in the areas of crime, urban violence, criminal justice, and public security, initially demonstrating a significant increase in these themes in recent years, the wide variety of thematic sub-areas involved in this growth, and the complexity of an analytical perspective that seeks a comparative integration of the various approaches. The article then discusses the thematic production in urban crime, criminal justice, and public security policies and their relationship to urban representations of growing violence aired by the media.
