The image in Brazil’s Social Sciences:

A critical essay

Abstract

The article seeks to identify the main trends in research on the image in Brazil’s social sciences. I analyze information from the project “Primeiro Mapeamento sobre Pesquisadores, Instituições e Ar­quivos em Imagem no Brasil” (1 “Mapping of Brazil’s Researchers, Institutions, and Archives on Ima­ges) and evaluate theses and dissertations, the establishment of work and research groups, and papers presented at national ANPOCS (National Association of Social Science Research and Graduate Stu­dies) and ABA (Brazilian Anthropological Association) meetings and at various regional and local meetings in the 1990s. Lastly, I sketch a profile of the consolidation of this field in Brazil, its principle findings, impasses, research lines, and the theoretical and methodological choices made.
