In this essay, we present a partial bibliographic review on migration and displacements between 1940 e 2018, granting special attention to the advances attained in the last decade (2008-2018). We examine the “state of the arts” of this field of study, on the basis of this survey and the analysis of other published reviews on this theme. Based on this survey and analysis of reviews on the subject, we examined the “state of the arts” of this area of study, considering its interdisciplinarity and highlighting the relationship between historical situations, research problems and theoretical and methodological paradigms adopted, over time and spaces. We first offer a synthetic historical overview of the relations between migration issues, political economy, racialization, structures of domination, social inequalities, and nation formation, and then examine the literature in three different historical periods: 1940-1980, 1990-2008, and 2008-2018. Based on this procedural (and partial) balance of the existing bibliography, we outline the progress achieved, as well as the limitations and challenges to be faced.
