Abstract

The article presents a review of the international literature on celebrities and politicians in the field of representative democracy. Although an essential part of society, we know little about the impacts and characteristics of famous individuals involved in politics. To what extent does celebrity alter forms of representation? What are the ideal types of celebrities? Do celebrities reveal the emergence of alternative mechanisms for engaging the population? The article aims to present an overview of this debate by reviewing the significant literature produced in the last 50 years – especially in the United States and England. In the conclusion, an analysis of the different typologies of political celebrities and celebrity politicians is made. Finally, an empirical research agenda that contributes to a better understanding of the process of transformation of politicians into celebrities in the context of Brazilian politics is proposed.
