Abstract

The article presents the fundamental elements of the theory of the human development proposed by Ronald Inglehart and his collaborators, emphasizing his hypotheses concerning the relationship among socioeconomic development, value priorities, and the democratization processes. Initially, central arguments that sustain that perspective are presented, characterized as a critical revision of the classic formulations of the theory of the modernization. In sequence, we discuss the supposed relationship between material development and the emergency of the so-called post materialistic values in the world perspective. Finally, we analyzed the hypothesis of the association between that values change and the democratization processes, especially emphasizing the impacts of the post materialistic syndrome about the constitution of a democratic political culture.
