Résumé

Etablir un schéma de stratification suppose une série de décisions méthodologiques. L’objec­tif de cet article est d’analyser quelles décisions sont prises par les différents courants théori­ques en ce qui concerne la division de la société en classes, et quels sont les schémas de stra­tification qui en résultent. Ce sujet est abordé à partir de l’analyse du récent débat à propos de la stratification sociale, en particulier sur les théories des classes et de la discussion des étu­des qui ont précédé ce débat. Les contributions de ces discussions au partage de la population brésilienne entre riches et non riches sont résumées sous forme d’une orientation générale: cel­le suivant laquelle la stratification de la société brésilienne entre riches et non riches peut être établie grâce aux informations d’un troisième groupe, celui des pauvres, et que ces groupes peuvent être définis à partir d’un axe commun (leur niveau de richesse). Cela signifie que la stratification peut être déterminée par une notion de richesse relative, entièrement dépendan­te de 1’ intensité de la pauvreté dans une société.
