Militarization of policing
critical approaches in perspective
Keywords:
Militarization, Policing, Security, CrimeAbstract
The article raises two different approaches to the process that has usually been called the militarization of the police and the policing of the armed forces in some Western liberal democracies. This debate is particularly important for Latin America, given its security policies aimed at combating crime, in particular those linked to drug trafficking. In presenting such approaches, we argue that both approaches are similar in the diagnosis of the same social phenomenon: the increas-ingly blurred distinction between military and police functions. However, they distance themselves from the premises from which they depart, from the kinds of questions they ask the object of study, and from their consequences in critical and normative terms. Explaining their oppositions and complements has the potential to improve the understanding of the debate put to researchers and policy makers, contributing to new questions, issues and research problems.
