Global Public Goods
between multilateral diplomacy and national sovereignty

The concept of global public goods started to be used in the 1980’s, in the context of globalization and the discussion of the growing interdependency among countries in solving problems no longer liable to be dealt with at the national level. According to several authors revisited in this article, the concept of global public goods is especially valuable in terms of providing answers to the challenges involved in this new situation. Such literature discusses the existence of a global public domain beyond the particular interests of national states, consequently requiring that public goods be subjected to international negotiations once their provision is no longer possible or efficient at a national level. An effort to justify the use of this concept from a theoretical point of view is made in the article, as well as is provided an intent to highlight its value compared to the traditional debate on multilateralism. Concrete cases were used to analyze its practical application.Downloads
