Abstract

The article aims to examine the trajectory of the reflection about mysticism within the socio­logical thought. The first part analyses the conceptions presented by the Marxist Sociology, the French Sociology, and the Comprehensive Sociology about the theme. The second part exami­nes the discussion within the scope of the literature in English and French. In the third part, the production on the theme in Brazil is examined, especially those that deal with mystical elements found in Brazilian religions. Finally, some possibilities raised by the discussion on mysticism are pointed as a way of thinking aspects of the Brazilian religious field, as well as modernity itself.
