Twenty years of sport and the Social Sciences in Latin America

a balance, an agenda

Abstract

Twenty years have passed since the publication of both the compendium O Universo doFutebol published by Roberto Da M atta in Rio de Janeiro and the first papers of Eduardo Archetti in Argentina. Nevertheless, only in the last ten years we have been able to talk about the foundation of a relatively autonomous Latin American field of studies with specific pro­duction. This paper aims at presenting a balance of such production, pointing out its conti­nuities and divergences, as well as reviewing the most relevant and problematic clusters together with the news (or not) on dealing with it. A possible agenda reviewing either areas of emptiness or those where the Latin American view would prove more productive is also part of the paper
