Abstract

This essay focuses on topics that have generated debates on affirmative action objectives and strategies. In the US, education and hiring by different economic sectors are among the main areas under the effect o f affirmative action policies. In Brazil, positions for and against affirma­tive action, quota policies, compensatory actions, or any other strategy to improve the access of discriminated groups to education and labor market have stimulated debates among movements involving black people and many other social segments. Questions on which strategies can be more or less successful cannot be answered unless empirical analyses focus on social relations and cultural values partaken by specific groups and societies in a specific moment o f their history.
