Abstract

This article analyses the concept of citizenship based on three major theoretical lines: Marshall theory about the rights of citizenship; the Tocqueville/Durkheim approach on civic culture; and the Marxist Gramsci theory on civil society. The relationship among citizenship, civil society and public space is thus approached.A second part deals with the citizenship issue from the viewpoint of liberalism and of some of its major criticisms. The communitarian, social-democrat, nationalist, multiculturalist, feminist as well as the multiple citizenship perspective are then analysed.
